Say Goodbye to Dated Popcorn Ceilings — for Good

If you live in a GTA home built before the 1990s, chances are you’re staring at a popcorn or textured stucco ceiling right now. They were the look of the 70s and 80s. Today, they’re the single biggest thing making a home feel old, dated, and stuck in the past.

Popcorn ceilings also collect dust, are a nightmare to clean, drop little flakes when you brush them, and make rooms feel lower and heavier than they actually are. Worse — many pre-1980s popcorn ceilings contain asbestos, which is why proper removal is not a DIY job.

Golden Star Painting has safely removed and refinished popcorn and stucco ceilings in hundreds of GTA homes — from Brampton bungalows to Toronto condos to Mississauga semis. The result? Modern, smooth, paint-ready ceilings that instantly make rooms feel taller, brighter, and brand new.

Why Remove Your Popcorn or Stucco Ceiling?

Instantly Modernises Your Home

Nothing else delivers a bigger "wow" factor for the price. Rooms feel taller, brighter, more open.

Boosts Property Value

GTA buyers actively avoid homes with popcorn ceilings. Smooth ceilings can add real resale value.

Healthier Indoor Air

Popcorn ceilings trap dust, allergens, and (in older homes) potentially asbestos. Removing them improves air quality

Easier to Light

Smooth ceilings reflect light beautifully; popcorn absorbs it and creates shadows.

No More Flaking, Crumbling, or Cobwebs

That fuzzy stuff that drops onto your floor? Gone forever.

Paint-Ready Surface

Once removed, your ceiling is the perfect blank canvas — paint it, accent it, or leave it bright white.

Our Safe, Dust-Controlled Removal Process

  • Free On-Site Inspection — We check ceiling condition, measure square footage, and ask about your home’s age (critical for asbestos screening).
  • Asbestos Testing (When Needed) — For homes built before 1990, we recommend asbestos testing before removal. If asbestos is detected, we follow strict Ontario abatement protocols or refer you to a certified removal specialist.
  • Full Protection Setup — Floors covered with thick plastic. Walls protected. Furniture moved or sheeted. Air paths sealed off.
  • Wet Scraping Method — We mist the ceiling lightly to soften the texture, then scrape it off carefully. Much less dust than dry scraping.
  • Skim Coating & Smoothing — Once the texture is off, we skim coat the entire ceiling with joint compound to fill scrape marks and create a perfectly smooth surface.
  • Sanding & Prep — Multiple passes of sanding to achieve that flawless flat finish.
  • Prime & Paint — A fresh coat of ceiling primer and paint, leaving you with a brand-new, smooth, modern ceiling.
  • Cleanup — Full removal of all plastic, drop sheets, and dust. We leave your home cleaner than we found it

Asbestos Safety — What GTA Homeowners Need to Know

Most homes built in the GTA before 1980 (and some up to the early 1990s) used popcorn ceiling materials that may contain asbestos. If disturbed without proper precautions, asbestos fibres can become airborne and pose serious health risks.

Here’s how we handle it:

  • For pre-1990 homes, we strongly recommend asbestos testing before any removal work begins. A simple lab test costs a fraction of the safety risk.
  • If the test comes back negative, we proceed with our standard wet-scraping process.
  • If asbestos is detected, we follow Ontario Ministry of Labour protocols or refer you to a certified asbestos abatement specialist.
  • We never cut corners on asbestos. Your family’s safety isn’t negotiable.

Ceiling Finish Options After Removal

Once the popcorn is gone, you’ve got options for your new ceiling finish:

  • Smooth (Modern Standard) — Most popular in the GTA. Flat, clean, paint-ready. Maximum brightness.
  • Light Knockdown Texture — Subtle texture for those who don’t love perfectly smooth ceilings.
  • Skip Trowel — Hand-trowelled artisan texture for a custom, high-end look.
  • Orange Peel — Light, modern texture (more common on walls than ceilings).
  • Painted Accent Colour — Soft greys, pale blues, or even bold colours can transform a ceiling completely.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

In the GTA, popcorn ceiling removal typically runs $3 to $6 per square foot for the full process (removal, skim coating, sanding, priming, and painting). A standard 12’x12′ room runs about $600–$1,000. Asbestos abatement (if needed) is priced separately.

A single room takes about 1 to 2 days. A whole-house ceiling removal usually takes 4 to 7 days, depending on size. We work in phases so you can usually stay in your home throughout.

Not as bad as you’d think. With proper plastic sheeting, drop cloths, and the wet-scraping method, we contain the mess almost completely. We do a full clean-up before leaving.

You can — but painting over popcorn often makes it worse. The paint adds weight, can make popcorn flake more, and won’t modernise the look. Removal is almost always the better long-term investment.

No. We work room-by-room and seal off the work area so the rest of your home stays usable. Most clients stay in their homes throughout the project.

We do not perform certified asbestos abatement directly. If your ceiling tests positive, we’ll refer you to a licensed asbestos removal company. Once they’ve cleared the ceiling, we come back in to finish the smoothing, priming, and painting.

Absolutely — many of our customers bundle popcorn ceiling removal with full interior painting. Bundling usually saves you 15-20% compared to two separate projects.
